Food is Key to Health!

Learn more about the great efforts of the Food Shelf Group by visiting The Food Shelf website.

The Food Shelf at HCMC addresses hunger and food insecurity among patients and families, with a long-term vision of creating a hunger-free hospital where all patients have the healthy food they need for their well-being. The Food Shelf at HCMC is one of the few food shelves in a hospital setting.

Staff provides nutritious food often coupled with health and diet education. Guidance is also offered to more sustained assistance programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps) and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant and Children). Services are offered at seven neighborhood clinics and over 25 clinics located within the hospital in downtown Minneapolis.

Who benefits?

Food Shelf Volunteers Thumbs Up Photo

Research at HCMC reveals that food insecurity, the lack of access to nutritious food, affects over a third of the patients we serve. Currently, the program supports approximately 3,000 households and 7,600 people a month, over half of which are children. We have the honor of serving a diverse community. Food is packaged in sturdy, handled bags which can be managed on public transportation, and are filled with items tailored to specific patient populations.

How Can I help?

Volunteer: as an individual, group, or corporate team to inventory and pack bags of healthful groceries that will be distributed to patients and families.

Donate: Support the purchase of food and packing supplies. Contributions are welcome online, or through an employer's matching gift program. Checks can be made out to Hennepin Health Foundation with Food Shelf in the memo line and mailed to: Hennepin Health Foundation, 701 Park Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415.
