Richard W. Asinger, MD
Dr. Asinger graduated from the University of Iowa in 1969, completed an internship at Hennepin County General Hospital followed by an internal medicine residency. Further training included a cardiovascular disease fellowship at the University of Minnesota before starting on the Cardiology staff at Hennepin in 1975.
Dr. Asinger has been the recipient of an American Heart Association (AHA) grant-in-aid and has served on the Board of Directors for the local AHA on several occasions over the past twenty years. His main research interests have been in the area of intracardiac thrombosis, particularly echocardiographic detection, and atrial fibrillation. He headed the Echocardiography Core Laboratory for the NIH-sponsored Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation trials from the late 1980s to mid-1990s. He also participated in the AHA/ACC/ESC Guideline Committee to establish international guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation.
Dr. Asinger is also a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
