Clinical Expertise

Dr. Sloan began his college career studying Nutrition and Religion at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Biology on a Regents scholarship at the University of California, Santa Cruz. At that same time he obtained a double major – a bachelor of arts in religious studies with an emphasis in Chinese religion.

He then spent two years teaching nursing students anatomy and physiology as a graduate student in physiology at San Jose State University. He completed Medical School and Residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of California, Davis, in Sacramento. He spent one year in a surgical internship at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.

In 1991 Dr. Sloan became a staff physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. He later started a private practice on the Big Island of Hawaii with an emphasis on sports, spine care and electromyography, and served the community as Medical Director of an outpatient physical therapy facility. He also founded the first subacute rehabilitation facility on the Big Island.

Dr. Sloan was a physician for the Kona IronMan Triathlon and accompanied the US team to the World Championships in England. He was a physician for the Olympic Training Center in San Diego and the Olympics and Paralympics in Salt Lake City. He served as instructor in the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatric Fellowship program at Kapiolani Womens and Childrens Hospital in Honolulu.

After moving back to Honolulu a few years ago, he started the first Concussion Care Center in Hawaii and continued his general PMR practice. He is a certified Ringside Physician with experience at the World Championship level.

Dr. Sloan is a staff physician in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division with special expertise in spine/back injuries. He also cares for patients with traumatic brain injuries. His special interests include spine care and scoliosis, and sports medicine, including performance arts (Musicians and Dancers), and concussion evaluation and care. He has spoken extensively on concussions and was a founding member of the Hawaii State Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Board for the Department of Health.
