Patient Billing

Healthcare expenses can be difficult to understand and afford, we’re here to help you make sense of your bill.

About My Bill

02/28/2024

As you may be aware, our claims and coverage discovery vendor, Change Healthcare, was recently targeted by a cyber-attack. Our Revenue Cycle Management and Executive Leadership teams have been working hard to determine the next steps.

As part of our immediate response, we have temporarily paused statements for patients who provide coverage information related to impacted payers. Currently, we are unable to verify coverage with certain payers who are also impacted by the Change Healthcare outage.

While you may not receive a statement for services during this time, you can reach out via MyChart or to our Customer Service Department at 1-800-495-4915, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm M-F to request an itemized statement, if needed.

Unfortunately, incidents like these may also lead to scammers attempting to take advantage of the uncertainty of this situation. Please know that Hennepin Healthcare is not currently calling or emailing patients about their bills, so if you are contacted by someone about your bill that appears to come from the hospital or an insurance company, please contact us or your insurance company directly to verify that it is real before providing any information in response.  Please alert those who may be vulnerable to such tactics to be wary of this scamming risk.

Providing our patients with the best quality and affordable healthcare

Thank you for choosing our facility for your healthcare needs. We are committed to providing our patients with the best quality and affordable healthcare. This information is intended to help you understand payment expectations. Please remember that it is your responsibility as a patient to know and understand your insurance benefits before being treated at our facility.

You are responsible for paying the balance left on your account after insurance, including co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance, and services not covered. In most cases, you will receive one bill which will list your hospital and physician services.

If you need assistance paying your bill, please see the Financial Assistance section below.

Insured Patients – Patients with insurance will receive a bill for the balances that are determined your responsibility by your insurance company, including co-pays, deductibles, non-covered services, and coinsurance balances.
Uninsured Patients – Patients without insurance will receive a bill for the total charges minus any Hennepin Plan discounts if applicable.

What your payments are used for

Payments received from patients, their insurance companies, or public programs are used to keep our medical center and mission alive. Hennepin Healthcare is owned and operated by Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc., a public subsidiary corporation owned by Hennepin County. Most of our funding comes from payments for health care services.

  • Hennepin Care Discount after Insurance
You may meet with a financial counselor to determine if you qualify for a Uncompensated Care discount.

Uninsured Patients

Hospital-Based Clinics

Many insurance plans pay for health care services provided in a hospital-based clinic differently than those provided in a doctor’s office. Your insurance may require that you meet your annual deductible and/or require that you pay a percentage of the bill rather than just an office visit co-payment. You should check with your insurance company if you have any questions. Read our FAQs about hospital-based clinics to learn more.
