Neuromuscular diseases affect the nerves that control your voluntary muscles.Voluntary muscles, such as arms and legs, move when nerves in the brain and spinal cord signal them to move. Certain diseases, some hereditary and some acquired, effect those nerves resulting in progressive muscle weaknesses and problems.

Experts at HCMC evaluate and comprehensively treat these disorders such as:

  • Myopathy
  • Neuropathy
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Hereditary muscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy
  • Acquired muscular disorders such as polymyositis and dermatomyositis
  • Neuromuscular junction Disorders such as myasthenia gravis

EMG Laboratory
The EMG (electromyography) Lab at HCMC is one of only two EMG labs in Minnesota to be led by two neuromuscular-trained physicians, and receive Accreditation with Exemplary Status by the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Genetic and Antibody Testing
Neuromuscular diseases can be acquired, or they can be hereditary.  If myopathy or neuropathy has been identified, genetic and antibody tests help determine the potential causes of a neuromuscular condition.

Autonomic Testing
The autonomic system controls involuntary functions like blood flow and heart rate. Patients with autonomic dysfunction may experience symptoms of dizziness or lightheadedness, racing heart, excessive or absent sweating, or bladder incontinence. Autonomic tests – which are non-invasive and painless – help identify potential autonomic dysfunction and an underlying cause.
