Hennepin County Medical Center has been serving the needs of children for over a century. The care provided has extended from treating the tiniest of neonates in our Newborn Nursery and Newborn Intensive Care Unit to teenagers and young adults up to age 21 in our clinics, Inpatient Unit, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Pediatric Primary Care
Our board certified pediatric doctors and nurses are committed to making sure the "little lives" they care for every day grow up healthy and strong. We believe that "big futures" are achieved by partnering with parents and families and providing care that is focused on their needs. The families we serve come from many cultural and ethnic groups. Interpreters are always available to meet the needs of our non-English speaking families. Several permanent staff members are also bilingual.
We offer routine services including well child exams and vaccinations as well as walk-in care for when your child is sick. We also have experience and expertise in treating a wide variety of serious and life-threatening health conditions. We see patients at the HCMC Pediatric Clinic located downtown as well as several of our neighborhood clinics. Our Patients in Transition program provides the support to make the jump from pediatric care into adult care.
HCMC Children’s Hospital
The HCMC Children’s Hospital consists of our 18-bed pediatric unit located on the 7th floor in the Orange Building of the hospital. Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hennepin County Medical Center is a 9-bed unit that provides state of the art care for infants, children, and adolescents who are critically ill or injured.
Within the inpatient and outpatient care of services, HCMC offers specialized care in many pediatric specialties and subspecialties such as cardiology, dermatology, travel medicine, asthma and brain injury.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The 21-bed Level IIIB Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) provides the highest level of care in a warm and nurturing environment to infants in distress at birth, those requiring close observation, and those transferred from other facilities for treatment of neonatal diseases. Because we are uniquely located within the Birth Center and staffed around the clock, we are available to delivering mothers at a moment's notice. An NICU Follow-Up Program follows patient graduates.
Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center
This includes the care we have provided to critically ill and injured children as a Level I Trauma Center, a designation we have held since 1989 and reinforced in 2010 with our verification as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. This separate pediatric verification recognizes our distinctive expertise in caring for children in emergency situations. We are proud to have better outcomes for kids who pass through our Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.
