Dermatology is the branch of medicine focused on diagnosis and treatment for disorders of the skin. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it is important to take care of it. Skin conditions can be inherited or acquired. Some skin conditions can be prevented. Self-exams are important and changes can signal a need for attention. Dermatologists use the ABCDE to describe what to look for in mole changes:

  • A = Asymmetry – one half of the mole is unlike the other half
  • B = Border – the edge or border of the mole is irregular or blurred
  • C = Color – the color is not uniform with shades of black, brown, tan and sometimes red, white and blue
  • D = Diameter – the mole is greater than 6 mm (the size of a pencil eraser) although melanomas can be smaller
  • E = Evolving – a mole that is changing or evolving or looks different than the others

Our board-certified dermatologists practice medical, surgical and academic dermatology. They offer a range of services for diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases, including allergy skin testing, fungal microscopic exams, ultraviolet light therapy, PUVA (psoralen and long-wave ultraviolet light of the A spectrum) therapy, excision of skin lesions, acne surgery, cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen, and biopsies. We also perform laser surgery, Mohs' surgery for skin cancers, and conduct research using interferon and other new drugs. Our dermatology staff also work with Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, and Oncology and Gynecology to further treat advanced skin conditions.

We have expertise in pediatrics and see those patients in our Pediatric Clinic. Children and adolescents can have unique skin conditions unlike those seen in adults.
